Switch Off


We live in a society that is constantly plugged in and it is incredibly hard to switch off. Our self worth is judged on likes on a picture and the amount of followers we have. Our lives are controlled by this small device which constantly finds itself in our palms. However, it wasn't until I began to get calculating that I realised something shocking. If you spend one hour a day on your phone (which is probably the minimum amount of time that anyone uses their phone for), by the end of the year that is 365 hours spent checking a phone. Divide this number by the amount of hours in a day, 24, and you get 15.2. This is how many days of your life are wasted if you spend an hour a day on your phone, half a month. Imagine all the things that you could do in that time. For starters that is the length of a very nice holiday.

Dear Body


Dear Body,

I've already spent 2 decades with you and yet only now am I realising you are the most important thing I own. You are my tool to success and without  you all else fails. But I haven't treated you with the respect you deserve. Since childhood I have been running around and falling. Small scars remain proof of the school playground were my high pitch squeal would fill the air and a huge smile upon my face.

Knife crime: Children to hidden blades


This blog post differs greatly from my previous ones and at first I thought I would have to justify my reasoning for posting this on a mental health blog. However, I came to the conclusion that it is an important topic that needs to be touched upon and that is all the justification needed.

Knife crime is growing and these days BBC news flashes up with another knife crime death in London and whilst we sigh with a brief moment of sadness for the victim we very quickly move on with our lives. That's because London stabbings are becoming a more frequent occurrence (I speak of London as that is the city that I hear most of due to my location in the UK. However, the knife crime capital is actually Cleveland in the North East of the UK). According to the Met Police knife crime has seen an increase of 24% and unless you haven't been checking the news recently, you will know that between April 22nd and April 28th of this year 6 deaths by knife occurred, one of which was believed to be gang related. It is important to pause here for a second as when thinking about knife crime the first thing that springs to mind is that these people must be a part of a gang. However, only one of last weeks stabbings was gang related meaning that the other 5 were just people who were carrying knifes on them. A scary concept as you can never know who is carrying one.

The stigma that surrounds mental health


Whenever someone begins to talk about mental health people squirm with embarrassment, and a feeling of general discomfort, but why is that? Everyone has mental health, good or bad, yet as a society we do not like to recognise it. However, if someone has a sprained ankle, a cold, or any other physical symptom, it is deemed socially acceptable to talk about and to feel sympathy towards that person. But why is it that it is okay to discuss physical health but not mental health?

Why I Blog About Mental Health


Whenever someone finds out that I am a blogger, there are two questions which always follow; what do you blog about? Why do you blog about mental health? 

I am fortunate enough that I am a woman in the 21st century and that I have a voice. Far too many people forget about this privilege and do not use it, or use it for the wrong reasons. I want to use this privilege to educate people, to comfort people and to grow as a person. I use this voice to have conversations surrounding mental health, to openly talk in schools about mental health and to create an online conversation about the honest truth about mental illness.
